Wendell Carter Jr. Out Indefinitely After Ankle Surgery

Orlando Magic forward Wendell Carter Jr. will miss the remainder of the NBA season after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured left ankle, the team announced Saturday. The 26-year-old big man suffered the injury during Thursday night's game against the Miami Heat.

Carter, a key starter averaging 14.8 points and 8.5 rebounds this season, landed awkwardly after contesting a shot in the third quarter. Team doctors confirmed the fracture following an MRI on Friday. The procedure was performed by Dr. David Porter in Indianapolis.

The timing couldn't be worse for the Magic, who currently hold the 5th seed in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining. Carter's absence leaves a significant hole in their frontcourt rotation as they prepare for the playoffs. Backup center Moritz Wagner is expected to see increased minutes.

Fans took to social media to express concern, with #GetWellWendell trending on Twitter. Carter responded Saturday afternoon: "Gutted I can't finish this journey with my guys. Surgery went well - road to recovery starts now."

This marks Carter's second major injury in three seasons with Orlando. He missed 22 games last year with a plantar fascia tear. The 2018 7th overall pick had been enjoying his most efficient shooting season (52.3% FG) before the injury.

The Magic host the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday night in their first game without Carter. Team officials say they'll reevaluate his recovery timeline in 8-10 weeks, though a return this season appears unlikely.
